Albemarle County Fire & Rescue intentionally set two rooms on fire Thursday to show the Albemarle County Citizen Fire Rescue Academy the importance of residential sprinkler systems.
The academy is designed for people who have a desire to learn about firefighters. The live burn took place at Hollymead Fire Station's parking lot.
Two areas were arranged as a typical room in a home. One had a sprinkler system and the other did not. By comparing both rooms after the fire, Albemarle County Fire & Rescue hopes students took away how effective sprinklers are in controlling and extinguishing fires in early stages.
Hollymead Fire Station is located at 3575 Innovation Drive in Charlottesville.
