Charlottesville High School honored Track and Field Coach Curtis Elder Wednesday evening at the 2012 Spring Banquet at Charlottesville High School for winning his 250th track meet. In recognition of his achievements and years of dedicated service, the CHS track will be named in his honor.

Elder started as a teacher and coach in the Charlottesville City Public School System in 1970. He coached basketball and football at Walker Junior High School; football, wrestling, cross-country, and track and field at Charlottesville High School. In 1973, he received a Master's of Education degree from the University of Virginia.

Throughout his 44-year coaching career, Elder has attributed success to one of his favorite sayings, "It's a team thing." Since he became the head track coach in 1978, Coach Elder has won more than 20 district and 20 regional championship. He has won seven State championships and tallied 253 career wins, which ranks him first among active coaches in the state of Virginia. Additionally, he was a 2005 nominee for the National Coach of the Year in Track and Field. While all of his accomplishments are praiseworthy, Coach Elder's most cherished recognition is the Walt Cormack Award in 1999, a state-wide acknowledgement by fellow coaches for his contributions to the sport of track and field.

Elder says the secret to his success came from his father, saying "He always said expect to do 100 percent in whatever you engage in. We had a farm and my father thrived on having the best crops around, and I think I got a lot of his philosophy as far as wanting to be on top."

State Championships: Girls' Indoor: 1998-1999, 1999-2000, 2006-2007; Boys' Outdoor: 1994, 1995, and 1997; and Boys' Indoor: 2003-2004.
