About 400 UVA Students' Transcripts Exposed Online

Posted: Updated:

Update: Hundreds of University of Virginia student transcripts mistakenly ended up online, a problem UVA is blaming on human error.

The university says 407 transcripts available on the web.  Almost 70 of them included the students' social security numbers.  A student who was searching his name on Google uncovered the breach.

UVA says it only affected students who applied to the Summer Language Institute the past two years.  The university is offering those students free credit screenings.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - A University of Virginia spokeswoman says human error likely caused about 300 students' transcripts to become accessible online.

Carol Wood says that some transcripts contained students' Social Security numbers.

She says there's no indication anyone tried to exploit the data. But the university will offer free credit screening to the affected students.

Wood says the problem appears to have affected 300 to 350 students who applied to the university's Summer Language institute.

University employees learned about the problem Tuesday morning after a student found his transcript online while conducting a Google search for an image of himself.

UVA assistant vice president Shirley C. Payne says university officials are trying to determine how long the information was accessible online.
