Press Release

On June 1, 2012, the Waynesboro Police Department took a seventeen year old juvenile into custody for attempting to stab to police officers with a knife in the lobby of the police department.  The juvenile, who is a Waynesboro male, had just been released to the custody of his mother after being brought to the police department for being intoxicated and destructive.

The first incident of police involvement with the juvenile took place at a residence in the Hopeman Station subdivision around 2:00 AM.  A neighbor called police because of a disturbance involving the juvenile and his girlfriend in the 2000 block of Monroe St.  When officers arrived, the suspect had fled but officers found his Ford Explorer with extensive damage.  The suspect's girlfriend indicated that he had wrecked his vehicle outside of Waynesboro and brought it back to her house.  He was intoxicated and upset over the damage to his vehicle so he broke every remaining intact window to his vehicle before fleeing.

Officers found the suspect an hour later (around 3:00 AM) on Fir St and took him into custody due to his level of intoxication. He was brought to the police department and released to his mother.  Officers did not place a charge for any alcohol violations.

At approximately 5:15 AM, or nearly thirty minutes after leaving with her son, the juvenile's mother returned to the police department with him requesting police assistance in controlling him.  She also indicated that he was holding a knife.  Two officers met suspect just outside the police department's main entrance when the suspect charged at them, brandishing the knife, threatening to harm them.  The officers withdrew into the lobby of the police department followed by the suspect.  After ignoring orders to drop the knife, both officers deployed their Tasers which were effective in subduing the suspect.

He was charged with two felony counts of assault on a law enforcement officer.  He was transported to the Shenandoah Valley Juvenile Detention Center in Verona.  His next court date is unknown.
