UVA Baseball Deals With Rain In Regional Opener

Posted: Updated:

The 15th-ranked UVA baseball team's first NCAA Regional game against Army has been postponed due to rain until Saturday.

Virginia and Army will now play Saturday at 1 PM at Davenport Field, with Oklahoma and Appalachian State to follow at 6 PM.

The start time on Friday for the 'Hoos and Black Knights had been moved from 4pm to 11am in hopes to avoid the foul weather, but the teams completed just 1/2 inning before heavy rains forced the officiating crew to clear the field at 11:15 AM.

The severity of the downpour weighed down the tarp and turned the infield to mud, making it impossible for the UVA grounds crew to get the tarp over the infield dirt.

Once the rain stopped falling, the grounds crew began the process of drying out the playing surface.

With more rained expected to fall, NCAA tournament officials suspended play indefinitely at 1:15 PM.

They will now play three games on Sunday, with the loser of Game 1 facing the loser of Game 2 in an elimination game at 11am.

The winner of Game 1 will play the winner of Game 1 at 3pm, and the winner of Game 3 will play the loser of Game 4 in an elimination game at 7pm.

The championship game will be played Monday at 4pm.
