A major grocery store chain announced plans to set up shop in Albemarle County on Tuesday, but groundbreaking could still be months or years down the road.
Wegmans, a supermarket based in New York, announced Tuesday it has signed a lease to anchor a shopping center planned for 5th Street Extended near the I-64 interchange. Developers say they expect to break ground next summer, but Albemarle County says they still have some issues to work out before setting any timeline
Albemarle County Spokesperson Lee Catlin said, "They really have to do with how the project is matching what's envisioned for that area in our comprehensive plan. But again, we've been working very actively with the developer and having good conversations about moving those issues forward."
Before development, the project needs to go through a public hearing and get approval from the planning commission and the architectural review board.
