Congressman Robert Hurt is wrapping up his Memorial Day tour of the 5th District Tuesday afternoon. He stopped at GE Intelligent Platforms in Albemarle County Tuesday morning for a special veteran's luncheon.
This is Hurt's eighth stop since Saturday, as he makes his way around the district to honor fallen veterans. That's what brought him to the GE Intelligent Platforms campus Tuesday.
The Albemarle County employer is taking time to honor 34 members of its staff that served in the armed forces. Congressman Hurt will present each of those veterans with a special coin to honor their service.
"You have people who have served us in the military over the years who work here," he said. "And I'm proud to have been invited to recognize them."
Hurt is currently up for re-election, and will face Fauquier County Democrat John Douglass at the polls in November.
Though it's a difficult task in many people's minds, Hurt says he's tried to separate politics from his Memorial Day trip around the district this weekend.
