Gas Prices Down, AAA Predicts More Cars on the Road

Posted: Updated:

The summer travel season is starting and with gas prices down double digits from last year, more drivers are hitting the road.

AAA predicts a little more than a million Virginians will travel 50-miles or more from home this weekend.  That's a 1.2 percent increase from last year.

Gas prices are down 16 cents from last Memorial Day weekend and 28 cents less than this year's peak prices.

Brendan Meeks of Charlottesville was filling up his tank Saturday. "We're going to Lake Anna, boating, gas for the boat, truck to haul the boat, and have a good time, gas prices won't slow us down from having a good time with our family," he said.

AAA says this weekend's pump prices are still the third highest on record, just behind last year and 2008.
