After rallying late to beat Maryland in the first two games of the series, the #19 ranked Virginia baseball team had the tables turned on them Saturday, as UVA lost 6-5 in College Park.
The Terps scored twice against closer Justin Thompson with two outs in the bottom of the 9th to top the Cavaliers.
Virginia had trailed 4-2, but scored 2 runs in the 8th on a Kenny Towns pinch hit double in the 8th, and took the short-lived lead in the 9th, as Jared King doubled in Stephen Bruno.
"That's a real great quality for this team that we have," says King. "They put up three in the 7th, and we did a great job to battle back, and give ourselves a chance to win. They just made one more play than we did today."
Head coach Brian O'Connor says, "Maryland deserved to win the game. They took it from us. But that's baseball. I'm really proud of this team, not only the weekend that we had, but also the regular season that we've had."
Starter Artie Lewicki went 6.2 innings and allowed four unearned runs, three hits and no walks while striking out five.
Virginia (36-16-1, 18-12 ACC) is the 4-seed in the ACC Tournament, and will take on 5-seed Clemson in the first round.
Top-seed Florida State and 8-seed Georgia Tech are also in Pool A with the Cavaliers.
