Students Team Up with Habitat to Provide Art for Sunrise

Posted: Updated:

They may not be old enough to actually build a house, but that's not stopping some Albemarle County students from teaming up with Habitat for Humanity.

Kids from Baker-Butler Elementary are putting together a mosaic to go inside habitat's new building at the Sunrise Trailer Park.  When it's finished, the art work will go on the second floor for all the new homeowners to enjoy.

Sara Parrish of Habitat for Humanity said, "You have to be 16 and older for liability reasons to work on the construction site, and something that we've had to do is think of creative ways to get our youth involved. So the mosaic came about last year."

Fifth grade teacher Lee Owen said, "They were really excited to help a local organization here in Charlottesville. That was powerful for them."

Habitat purchased the trailer park in 2005. Three other elementary schools are also creating art projects to go inside the new building.
