Staunton Woman Sentenced to 28 Years for Smothering Her Baby

Posted: Updated:

A Staunton woman convicted of smothering her 2-month-old baby to death in November 2009 will spend 28 years in prison. Ashkea Johnson, now 19, was sentenced Thursday in Staunton Circuit Court.

In December 2010, a jury convicted Johnson of premeditated first-degree murder for the death of her daughter Rosaleeia. Johnson, who was 17 years old at the time of the murder, smothered Rosaleeia with a plastic diaper bag.

In a three-hour interrogation video played for jurors in the 2010 trial, Johnson confessed to suffocating her daughter while saying, "Stop crying, please stop crying." She admitted trying to do the same thing one week before the murder. Johnson was also convicted of attempted second-degree murder for that incident.
