Nine people in Albemarle County may not have the home they were promised at the supportive housing development "The Crossings at Fourth and Preston" for another six months. Future residents are still waiting for federal funding to be approved.
Every year Albemarle County distributes Housing and Urban Development vouchers to assist people in need find a living situation. As of now the federal government is still approving the vouchers, and the process is slow.
Ken Boyd of the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors said, "The unfortunate part is these people are homeless now so they're on the street and this delay is just costing them more and more time to spend without a home."
There is a possibility Albemarle County may pick up the cost of the vouchers and get reimbursed later. Boyd says he is unsure if there is a legal way of doing that, but supervisors are looking for alternative ways to move these folks into The Crossings at Fourth and Preston quickly.
All other residents of The Crossings at Fourth and Preston have already moved into the building.
