Fluvanna County supervisors voted to fast track a stalled fire station project. The $1.5 million project will replace the Fork Union Station on Route 6 and rebuild it next to the community center on Route 15.
The 2009 stimulus provided most of the funding, but construction bids came in over budget. Now, supervisors decided in a 5-0 vote Wednesday to streamline the project into one phase. This will have one firm design and build the fire station.
Fluvanna Economic Development Director Bobby Popowicz said, "At the beginning part of the process, it makes it a little longer because you're negotiating during the time you're trying to get everything set. But, once you have everything set, they know what to do and they move forward with it."
Now that supervisors approved the new process, construction could start in august with the new fire station opening next spring.
