Many students struggle to fit in at school but for those who speak English as a second language it can seem nearly impossible. A Charlottesville organization is trying tackle that issue and find ways to reach out to Latinos in our community.
Creciendo Juntos (CJ) group wants to make it easier for Spanish-speaking students to succeed in the classroom. The group held a workshop Wednesday to discuss the resources available in our area for Latino children.
Program organizer Maria Williams says it is important for teachers to incorporate all learning styles so no one is left out. "Each of our different cultures in this world learns differently and if we're not sensitive to those needs then we're not really doing an effective job of teaching," she stated. "So that's what I think - that's what we're trying to do is to have a better understanding of the differences."
Creciendo Juntos means "growing together". The group works to help the Latino community through education and programming.
