Don't be surprised if you see some familiar faces in the latest edition of "America's Top Doctors". The 11th edition of the physician guide shows 53 of the nation's best physicians are at the University of Virginia.
Dr. Steven Dekosky, the vice president and dean of the School of Medicine at UVA, says he is happy so many of the doctors made the list.
"For the most part when I looked at the physicians in my field, who I know, they are not only people who have helped make research advances in the field, but they are all people who I would not have a problem sending a patient to," said Dr. Dekosky.
He says having more than 50 doctors ranked in the top 1 percent demonstrates that UVA's physicians offer more than just intelligence.
Dr. Dekosky stated, "In general, people who make this list are those people who are not only smart and not only understand their fields, but they're also people with whom patients feel comfortable with whom families feel comfortable."
The physician guide - published by Castle Connolly Medical - doesn't come from a third party, but instead from their peers. Tens of thousands of doctors submit nominations before a physician-led research team reviewed the doctors' credentials.
The 53 physicians cover 28 specialties including areas such as infectious diseases, geriatric psychiatry, and in Dr. Dekosky's case, neurology.
The book then divides those doctors based on location, so no matter where patients are, they can find a physician that meets their specific needs.
Dr. Dekosky said, "If people either live nearby or if they are looking for a second opinion, it means that I am likely to be named as are my colleagues in other fields as someone to go see for a complex problem."
In addition, 20 doctors from UVA were selected for the companion publication "America's Top Doctors for Cancer."
