Central Virginia realtors and builders are raising money to help seniors stay in their homes as they age.
The Albemarle Housing Improvement Program (AHIP) is working with the Charlottesville Area Association of Realtors and Blue Ridge Home Builders Association to collect $25,000 in funds and supplies.
The realtors will have collection jars at open houses this upcoming weekend. The Seniors Safe at Home donation drive continues at realtor offices and open houses through July 15. They will use those donations to help repair or rehab 5 to 10 homes to make them safer for older adults.
AHIP Development Director Ravi Respeto said, "It's the difference between them being able to live in their home and live out their senior years in their home in a safe way and having to sell their home and go into a nursing facility, and that cost is great."
Right now, 300 central Virginia households are on a wait list for the repairs, half of those are seniors.
