Most Virginia Abortion Providers to Meet New Rules

Most of Virginia's abortion providers say they will comply with new state regulations that require them to meet the same strict building standards as new hospital construction.

License applications obtained by The Washington Examiner show that 20 of 23 abortion clinics already are in compliance or plan changes to meet the requirements.

Two clinics plan to perform fewer than five first-trimester abortions a month and don't need to meet the regulations. The other clinic has stopped providing abortions.

Critics of the regulations had said they were too burdensome and would put clinics out of business.

NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia executive director Tarina Keene says it's costing clinics $150,000 to $3 million each to comply and their plans still must be approved by the state.
