An Albemarle County elementary school is getting high marks for having healthy kids in the classroom. Red Hill Elementary is receiving a gold award with distinction from the US Department of Agriculture - one of only three schools in the state to receive the honor.
It's part of the HealthierUS School Challenge. The staff credited nutritious food in the cafeteria and P.E. time every day.
ACPS Director of Food Services Christina Pittsenberger said, "The most important thing of it all is just truly that children can understand wellness in their lifestyle and how to choose good foods, understand moderation, how to be physically active and be fun, have it be fun."
Along with the title comes a $2,000 check. Meriweather Lewis Elementary is receiving a bronze recognition Monday afternoon, and Hollymead Elementary is also being recognized.
