11th Annual Boyd Tinsley Women's Clay Court Classic Begins Monday

Posted: Updated:

Play was set to begin Sunday at the 11th annual Boyd Tinsley Women's Clay Court Classic in Charlottesville, but rain has washed out the first day of qualifying.

Canada's Stephanie Dubois won the title at the Boar's Head Sports Club last season, outlasting Portugal's Michelle Larcher de Brito.

32 singles players and 16 doubles teams will compete in the main draw with $50,000 in prize money awarded in the USTA Pro Circuit event.

Main draw play begins Tuesday, so they'll have to get all the qualifying in tomorrow, moving indoors, if necessary.

Tournament Director Ron Manilla said, "It was definitely a bummer, but we really had no choice. It's a clay court tournament. It's on the road to the French Open. You've got a lot of clay court players here, and to move it indoors, they just don't want to hear it.

UVA's Li Xi received a wildcard invitation and will be one of 32 players attempting to qualify for four spots in the main draw Monday.

The singles and doubles finals will take place Sunday, April 29.

This year, through an arrangement with the French Tennis Federation, the USTA will award one women's singles main draw wild card into the 2012 French Open to the American woman who finishes with the best combined results in the following three $50,000 clay court USTA Pro Circuit events-Charlottesville; Dothan, Alabama (held last week); and Indian Harbour Beach, Florida (being held next week).
