Civil Rights Leader Julian Bond to Retire

Civil rights leader, history professor and former national chair of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Julian Bond is retiring from the University of Virginia on May 1.

UVA plans to establish the Julian Bond Professorship in Civil Rights and Social Justice as a permanent position to continue his legacy.

The "Julian Bond Celebration Gala" will be held at the Plaza Hotel in New York City to help raise funds for the professorship. The event will be emceed by comedians Wanda Sykes and Chris Tucker.
