Charlottesville City Council Considers Racial Disparity Statistics

Posted: Updated:

Charlottesville City Council is moving forward on plans to address racial disparity within the juvenile justice system.  Councilors have decided to integrate more members into its existing Juvenile Justice Advisory Council.

The Charlottesville-Albemarle Criminal Justice Coalition and others will work with the board to tackle racial inequality.  The coalition addressed city council Monday night, urging them to take action.

The decision comes after a recent University of Virginia study, which found black youth are one and a half times more likely to be put on probation in comparison to white youth.  The report also shows white juveniles are four times more likely to be diverted from the system altogether.
