Waynesboro police are searching for a hit and run driver who killed a pedestrian and kept going.
Police found the body of 56-year-old Betty Marcelle Wheeler in the northbound lanes of Route 340 (Stuarts Draft Highway) near Grandview Drive Saturday night.
Sunday, her daughter is begging that driver to come forward and help bring closure for her family. The accident happened around 8:30 last night. Neighbors say they heard nothing until they saw police and fire crews light up the street. When they realized what happened neighbors say they were shocked.
Wheeler's daughter, Sarah Wheeler, says her mother was walking to the store to get a soda and was hit just as she was leaving the neighborhood. Family and friends say they can't comprehend why the driver didn't stop but they want closure.
"If someone would just come forward, we don't want to do nothing terrible to anybody, we just don't understand what was going on, why nobody saw her. Just come forward please," said Sarah.
She says she went to the scene of the accident but didn't see any tire marks that would indicate the driver tried to avoid her mother. She and her family hope that someone will come forward with useful information.
In the mean time, police are looking for a silver car with front end damage. Waynesboro police are continuing to investigate the accident. If you have any information that can help identify the driver, call the Waynesboro Police Department or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-322-2017.
