Piedmont Regional Dental Clinic Expands Service

Posted: Updated: April 5, 2012 04:56 PM EDT

As of Thursday, thousands of uninsured people in Albemarle County and Charlottesville have a new option for dental care.  The Piedmont Regional Dental Clinic in Orange is expanding its service area.

At one time, Piedmont Regional served only Madison, Greene, Culpeper, and Orange.  But because of increased demand from uninsured patients, the office decided to open its doors to the people of Albemarle and Charlottesville.

Piedmont says its goal is to provide entire families with affordable care.  Their services are approximately 75 percent to 80 percent less expensive than for-profit dental care.

"What's great about our clinic is that we service children and adults with Medicaid, Famis, and Famis plus," said Eric Shifflett with Piedmont Regional Dental Clinic.  "What happens so often is that children come in and Mom and Dad can't be seen. So we're giving them the option of being seen the same time the kid is being seen for dental care/oral health."

What sets Piedmont Regional apart from Charlottesville's free dental clinic is that it provides full service dentistry.

The expansion is especially timely because Wednesday a patient was rushed to the hospital after going without care for an extended period of time.  Doctors are hoping that by giving people more health options, they can avoid similar situations.
