Lewis DUI Hearing Continued, Still Awaiting Blood Results
Prosecutors are still awaiting blood results in the case against a Crimora woman charged with driving under the influence and manslaughter back in November.
The driver, Jessica Lewis, was slated to appear in court Monday morning on those charges. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for 10:30 at Albemarle Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. But Lewis waived her right to that hearing about 30 minutes before it began. However, the case will move forward, even though Lewis' blood results are still under analysis, almost five months after this fatal wreck.
Police say Lewis got behind the wheel after she had been drinking back in November. She was driving along Half Mile Branch Road in Crozet when she lost control of her vehicle and hit a tree. The car then caught fire. Two passengers - Lewis' daughter and ex-husband - did not survive the crash.
Lewis' case is now set for June 4. We have no word on why blood results have been delayed, but those involved with the case - including the state forensics lab - say the lengthy delay for blood results is unusual. The Virginia Department of Forensic Science cites a larger than normal volume of cases and the need for multiple tests as the main reasons for the delay.
