UVA Students Win Startup Competition for WalkBack App

Posted: Updated:

An award-winning mobile application, developed by University of Virginia students, could give new meaning to the term "buddy system."

Ashutosh Priyadarshy and Duylam Nguyen-Ngo won a student startup competition at the South by Southwest Interactive conference in Austin, Texas with their WalkBack app.

The app allows students to check in with police and file a flight plan to connect with the university.  It can also digitally walk friends in a user's social network home.  It starts with a simple fist bump.

Priyadarshy and Nguyen-Ngo explain, "When we bump phones it sends a connection between us, requests to be on each others social network and from there you can check on each others status throughout the night."

The app that already has a working prototype, can also collect anonymous data for universities on where students are coming and going to effectively protect those areas.

The pair has won $3,000 and gained priceless contacts with investors and entrepreneurs.  They hope to get the funding necessary to bring this online by the fall.

The app would be free to users, with universities absorbing the cost of the software.
