Authors of VA Uranium Report to Hold 1 of 3 Briefings in CharlottesvillePosted: Updated:
The authors of a National Academy of Sciences report examining the impact of allowing uranium mining in Virginia have scheduled a series of public briefings.
The briefings are set to begin Wednesday in Fairfax. Other briefings are scheduled March 29 in Charlottesville and March 30 in Richmond.
A spokeswoman said the hearings are intended to inform the public and will not result in any changes to the report.
The report was delivered to the state in December and was intended to assess the statewide impacts of ending a 30-year moratorium on uranium mining in Virginia. It concluded the state will have to address a number of health and environmental issues and risks before allowing uranium mining.
Virginia Uranium Inc. wants to mine a 119-million pound deposit in Chatham.
