Buckingham County Elementary School Closing Doors

Posted: Updated:

Gold Hill Elementary in Buckingham County is shutting its doors because of a $3 million shortfall in the school's budget.  While school board members say they're doing their best, parents and others in the community say it simply is not enough.

It's a harsh reality for many parents and students at Gold Hill Elementary.  Teachers and students are being moved to a much larger Dillwyn Elementary, a school that is also farther away.

Cecil Terry, a concerned parent, said, "They're not telling us what's going to happen, they're not telling us what's going to be cut."

Not knowing the details is a concern of many parents.

"There really is not much good news on the horizon, but I have faith in my teachers and children that it will not hurt instruction and that's my primary concern," stated superintendent Gary Blair.

But parents are still worried about the overall education of their kids.  With more students per teacher, parents like Trudy Nicholson are concerned that already struggling students will just keeping falling behind.

"But if they don't have the time they aren't going to be able to do it," Nicholson said.  "What's your biggest concern, him falling between the cracks, because he already struggles."

Parents and people in the community aren't giving up.

Rev. Troy Hickman of Buckingham County stated, "We need to look and explore every avenue possible to keep Gold Hill open."

Something Blair is willing to discuss.  "I want them to work with me on the decision, where do you suggest I cut?" he asked.  "Let me show you the entire budget, let's look at it and let's find something out if we can find it."

Gold Hill Elementary is scheduled to close at the end of this school year.  Kids will be moved next fall, unless the fight to save the school changes things.
