The race for the 5th District Democratic Congressional seat is getting more crowded. A retired military officer has entered the race for the Democratic nomination.
Fauquier County farmer and retired Air Force brigadier general John Douglass announced his campaign in a video on his website this week. Douglass seeks the nomination along with fellow Democrat Peyton Williams of Charlottesville.
Douglass says his 28 years of government service makes him the best candidate to serve the 5th District.
"This is the time for us to plan for the future," Douglass said. "We need to bring our troops home from Afghanistan and get our economy going here at home. I've served all over the world under our flag and Americans are hard working people and if we can get this economy going again, we can make Virginia at the top of the states."
A convention will be held in May in Nelson County to determine the Democratic nominee. The Democratic candidate will challenge first-term Republican Robert Hurt.
