Update: Albemarle County police say the driver of the tractor trailer has been charged with reckless driving.

A tractor trailer accident caused traffic delays on Route 29 southbound near Covesville Sunday. The accident, which closed both southbound lanes, happened around 10:00 Sunday morning, causing traffic to back up more than 3 miles until about 2:00 Sunday afternoon.

Police say the tractor trailer's driver ran off the road and crashed into a power pole. The driver was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center with minor injuries and was later released.

Albemarle County police say the tractor trailer took out some power lines when it crashed.

"A tractor trailer came down the road and ran off the road and cut off one of our poles and it ended up sideways in the road upside down.  That's what took so long to get the traffic going, we'll still be here for awhile to change out the pole," explained Appalachian Power line crew supervisor Billy Habel.

Appalachian Power crews worked on getting those lines back up and running through the afternoon, and power was restored to over 400 customers by 5:00. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) had to wait till the power lines were cleared up before trying to open the road for traffic.

Albemarle County police are investigating the cause of the accident.
