The Albemarle County Sheriff's Office is cruising into the new year with a new look and a new transport tool.
The office is switching over its fleet of cruisers to all black vehicles to make deputies easier to identify. It's the only law enforcement agency in Central Virginia to have all black cruisers.
Five new cruisers have already been added to the fleet and the Sheriff hopes to add up to an additional four each year at no additional cost as the older models are phased out.
It's also added a new cutting edge transport van filled with cameras to keep a watchful eye on inmates.
Sergeant T.D. Layman with the Albemarle Sheriff's Office says, "The camera system allows us to monitor the inmates during transport and to make sure there are no problems arising during the transport. The deputies monitoring the inmates, if there are any problems they can quickly address those problems."
The new van is also equipped with a cage that has 3 sections to separate male and female inmates.
A fundraiser is scheduled for May in hopes of adding to the office's search and rescue fleet.
