WWII Veteran Receives French Legion of Honor Award

One of central Virginia's most decorated war veterans is adding honors to his list.  Carl "Chubby" Proffitt was part of the first wave to hit France's Omaha Beach on D-Day.

He received the French Legion of Honor award at the French embassy in Washington D.C. last Wednesday.  But only five people could make the trip with him.

So Monday night, hundreds of family, friends, and supporters took time celebrate at American Legion Post 74 in Albemarle County.

"The stripes up there for overseas duty.  Good little boy's medal, good conduct medal," said Proffitt.  "But the majority of them are for something I did crazy."

Congressman Robert Hurt joined the celebration, and presented Proffitt with a special gift - an American flag that flew over the U.S. Capitol.  Proffitt has been honored with more than 30 different awards for his service.
