Charlottesville Man Dies in I-64 Crash

A Charlottesville man is dead Sunday night after a crash that shut down part of Interstate 64 in Albemarle County just as the snow started to fall.

The man, 36-year-old Djarad Robinson from Charlottesville was in a Chevy Malibu that ran out of gas and was stopped along east bound Interstate 64 near the 5th Street exit.

Virginia State Police say a 16-year-old driving an SUV ran off the road and slammed into the car. Four people were taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. Troopers say charges are pending and the accident was not weather related.


The NBC29 newsroom received the following press release from Virginia State Police about a fatal crash Sunday afternoon on I-64 the crash was not weather-related.
 
A Charlottesville man is dead and four other people are recovering from injuries following a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 64 at the 120 mile marker in Albemarle County. The crash occurred at 2:30 p.m. (Feb. 19). A 2007 Chevrolet Malibu had run out of gas and was stopped on the paved right shoulder of the eastbound lanes of I-64. A 2002 Ford Explorer was traveling east on I-64 when it ran off the right side of the road. The SUV then ran off the left side of I-64, crossed back across the lanes, ran off the right side of the eastbound lanes and struck the stopped Malibu.
  
The 16-year-old male driver of the Ford Explorer and his 40-year-old father were both wearing seat belts and were both transported by ambulance to UVA Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
 
The driver of the Malibu, Carleisha Washington, 32, of Troy, Va., and her front seat passenger (adult female) were also transported by ambulance to UVA Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The back seat passenger, Djarad Robinson, 36, of Charlottesville, was transported to UVA Hospital where he died later Sunday afternoon.
 
Charges are pending at this time. The crash remains under investigation. The 16-year-old driver's name is not being release b/c he is a juvenile.
