The top-ranked and defending national champion Virginia men's lacrosse team began its title defense with a 9-8 win at #20 Drexel Saturday.
Sophomore Rob Emory scored the game winning goal for the Cavaliers with 4:48 left in the 4th quarter.
Former St. Anne's-Belfield star Owen Van Arsdale led UVA with 2 goals and 1 assist in his first college game.
Tewaaraton-award winning senior attackman Steele Stanwick did not register a point in the win.
Head coach Dom Starsia says, "Steele Stanwick draws a lot of attention. He's not always going to be able to make the play, finish the play. Some other guys are going to have to help carry the load, and you saw the beginning of that today, and that's what I'd like to think we're going to become over the course of the season."
Virginia returns to action Tuesday at home against VMI at 7pm.
