The #10 Virginia women's lacrosse team beat #7 Loyola 14-9 in their season opener at Klockner Stadium Saturday.
Senior Ainsley Baker tied a career high with 5 goals, while senior Josie Owen had one goal and 6 assists.
UVA led the Greyhounds 6-5 at halftime, and scored six straight goals to open the second half, including three in a row by Baker.
"We always knew that they were our first game, and we had lost to them the past two years, so it was really, really, really good to win," says Baker, "and especially coming out and scoring 14 goals was impressive, as well."
Head coach Julie Myers adds, "We've been working since September to get ready for this opening game, and then trying to carry it throughout. The girls did a great job, they were prepared, and they worked really hard to get this win today."
The win in the season opener is the first for the Wahoos since 2009, and they return home to host Richmond Wednesday at 5pm.
