Cleaning Moore's Creek

Posted: Updated:

The Thomas Jefferson Soil and Water Conservation District is offering cost share assistance to farms and homeowners along the Moore's Creek Watershed.

A $204,500 grant aims to clean-up fecal bacteria from Moore's Creek in Charlottesville and Albemarle County. Homeowners and farmers within the Moore's Creek Watershed can apply now to participate in the cost-share assistance program. Funding through the grant can help farmers install fencing to keep livestock out of the water and provide alternate water systems. Homeowners can receive financial help to repair or replace septic systems.

The Thomas Jefferson Soil and Water Conservation District is fielding the applications. District Manager Alyson Sappington says the efforts should improve the creek's water quality.

"Anything that homeowners and farmers can do with this project, within the Moore's Creek Watershed, will help the localities meet their targets for pollution reduction and assisting in the Chesapeake Bay effort," she said.

In 1998, Moore's Creek was placed on Virginia's impaired waters list. It was determined the creek was unsafe for swimming or fishing.
