If you make a prank phone call, it could soon cost you big in Virginia. The state Senate voted Thursday in favor of House Bill 39.
It makes a phone call to someone else's phone with the intent to annoy a class three misdemeanor. If passed, it would carry up to a $500 fine.
If you do it more than once, you might land in jail, and get a $2,500 fine. While a majority voted for it, at least one senator spoke against it.
34th District State Senator Chap Peterson said, "A class one misdemeanor can be punishable by up to 12 months in jail, so I think that's just a little bit much."
The bill also carries fines and possible jail time for intentionally clogging up emergency communication lines. It now heads to the governor for a signature.
