Parents and educators can talk about the hazards of distracted driving, but seeing that danger is altogether different. Blue Ridge Community College (BRCC) brought in a simulator that offers a safe way to experience driving while intoxicated or while texting.
The simulator is operated by PEER Awareness and travels all over the country. BRCC says it's targeting drivers of college and high school age.
James Wright of BRCC said, "With the advent of the texting and the little cell phones now that'll do everything but talk to Mars, we've got a lot of distracted driving too, and that's becoming one of the primary causes."
BRCC paid about $1,500 to use the simulator. It's a real car outfitted with sensors specially designed to give drivers some sobering lessons.
