You can add Waynesboro to the growing list of school divisions with a shrinking payroll. Waynesboro's superintendent has proposed a $31-million budget for the coming school year.
It would close part of a funding gap by eliminating about a dozen jobs. They include art, band and P.E. teachers as well as several support staffers. But even with those deep cuts, Waynesboro's school budget would still have a deficit.
Doug Norcross of the Waynesboro School Board said, "We're about $350,000 out of balance right now. So that would mean more cuts. And the really sad part about it is some of the programs that we would have to cut are for the children that need it most."
If another round of cuts is necessary, it could include math and reading specialists.
A public hearing on the Waynesboro school budget is set for next Tuesday.
