A women's group is taking a stand, fighting back against gang activity in Charlottesville. Women United in Philanthropy held a 'Gangs: the Wrong Family' workshop at the Omni Hotel in Charlottesville Wednesday.
Organizers say Charlottesville hasn't seen as strong of a gang presence as other communities, but that isn't stopping efforts to crack down on crime. Members learned about current gangs, why people join them, how to recognize gang affiliation and what to do as a community leader.
Representatives of Safe Schools - Healthy Students and the Commission on Children and Families gave folks a solution-based approach to help put an end to gang activity.
Robin Amato of Women United In Philanthropy says,"Its primarily in children and teenagers to 19-20 years of age and the things to watch with your children of what type of characteristic changes that are going on."
This is the first of four educational events Women United In Philanthropy plans to host throughout the year.
Their next event will be held on April 23 where they will decide which non-profit organization that supports women and children in the community will receive a grant.
