Augusta Health Opens Outpatient Center in Staunton

Posted: Updated:

A visit to Augusta Health no longer means simply a trip to the hospital complex in Fishersville. There is an alternative to the massive parking lots, long walks and emergency room waits.

On Wednesday the hospital opens its new Outpatient Center in Staunton along Statler Boulevard, in what used to be a Blockbuster Video store. The facility is part urgent-care clinic, part imaging center for X-rays and mammograms. It can also handle lab services like blood work and strep tests.

Augusta Health has nicknamed the facility a "Mini E.R." because it can serve many patients who would have gone to the emergency room.

"Here we can take care of any age group and we will take care of acute illnesses like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea," explains Lois Myers, operations director of the new center. "We can take care of lacerations, fractures, sprains -- all of those things."

The new outpatient center replaces an outdated, undersized one near downtown Staunton. It's open extended hours and weekends to accommodate patient work schedules.

The opening of the facility is another step in Augusta Health's master plan, which includes many health care facilities away from its Fishersville hospital. The growth has also brought convenience care clinics and family practices in Waynesboro, Churchville and Weyers Cave.
