A University of Virginia professor received one of the nation's most prestigious arts awards Monday afternoon in Washington, DC.
Poet Rita Dove is one of seven 2011 National Medal of Arts recipients. She accepted the award from President Barack Obama at the White House Monday. Dove won a Pulitzer Prize for her literary work in 1987, and served as US Poet Laureate from 1993 until 1995.
Dove has been a member of UVA's English department since 1989.
