Albemarle County police are stepping up enforcement of a law that keeps you and those in blue safe. Virginia's "Move Over" law requires all drivers to move over or slow down while passing stopped emergency vehicles.
Twelve patrols and undercover units spent the day on the Route 250 Bypass, pulling over speeding drivers, and some that failed to move over while passing a police van.
"It came into law in 2010, so we just want to remind people as they pass by be it a police vehicle, or an emergency vehicle, or even a tow truck, anything with blinking lights they need to move over," said Albemarle County Police Sergeant Darrell Byres.
Since 1999, more than 150 officers across the country have been killed on the side of the road. With funding help from Virginia DMV grants, police organize operations like Monday's three or four times every year.
