Police Investigate Officer Involved Fatal Shooting in Culpeper

UPDATE: We are learning more about what investigators say led up to a Culpeper police officer shooting a suspect Thursday morning.
Virginia State Police tell us the officer was responding to a suspicious person call in a church parking lot on north East Street. While he was trying to check 54-year-old Patricia Cook's ID, she allegedly closed the car window on the officer's arm and started to drive off, dragging him along. That is when the officer shot her several times.
A suspect is dead after a police officer involved shooting in downtown Culpeper.
The incident started as a report of a suspicious person on north East Street Thursday morning.
A town of Culpeper officer shot the suspect, 54-year-old Patricia A. Cook of Culpeper, after they apparently had an exchange and Cook tried to drive away in a Jeep. The Jeep crashed into a telephone pole a few blocks away.
Virginia State Police are investigating and the officer is on administrative leave.

CULPEPER - The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation Culpeper Field Office's "Police Shooting Investigation Team" remains on scene this hour as special agents continues their investigation on into the fatal shooting of a Culpeper woman by a Town of Culpeper Police Officer.
It was at about 10 a.m. Thursday (Feb. 9) when the officer became engaged in a physical altercation with the driver of a Jeep Wrangler in the 300 block of North East Street in the Town of Culpeper.
During the course of the altercation, the driver, Patricia A. Cook, 54, of Culpeper, Va., was shot by the officer. Cook died at the scene. Her remains have been transported to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Manassas for examination and autopsy.
The Culpeper Town Police and Culpeper County Sheriff's Office are assisting State Police with the ongoing investigation.

One person is dead following an officer-involved shooting about 10 a.m. today.
A Culpeper police officer responded to a suspicious person call in a parking lot in the 300 block of North East Street. The suspicious person was in allegedly in a Jeep Wrangler.
An altercation occurred and shots reportedly were fired. The wrecked Jeep was located in the 200 block of North East Street. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Rescue personnel responded to the scene.
The officer, a five-year veteran, sustained minor injuries. He has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard policy, pending the outcome of an investigation, which is being conducted by the Virginia State Police.
Any additional information regarding the investigation will be released by the Virginia State Police.
