Saturday, the University of Virginia's Asia Institute held a workshop to teach teachers from across the commonwealth how to incorporate Japanese art and culture into their curriculum.
The workshop was funded by a $5,000 grant from the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership. Organizers say this is the first step in a larger project that aims to create ready-made lesson plans about Japan that also meet Virginia's standards of learning.
Mieko Kawai of the Asia Institute Workshop said, "To connect with another culture is very important and they're going to learn something different and see the world in a differently."
The workshop brought attention to a language bill in Congress that says a lack of foreign languages in our schools threatens the security and economic well-being of the U.S.
