Charlottesville police are cracking down on jaywalkers and drivers who don't stop for pedestrians. On Friday, they went undercover to catch folks in the act.
A volunteer acting as a decoy near the University of Virginia spent some time going back and forth across the crosswalk at Thompson and Emmet Streets. Police nabbed drivers who didn't stop and some folks who walked into traffic not using designated areas.
Charlottesville Police Lieutenant Ronnie Roberts said, "We've had some victims that have been hit crossing in the crosswalks as well as in some cases where the motorists complain about the behavior of some of our pedestrians community so what were trying to do is educate them."
This traffic enforcement plan to curb jay-walking, speeding and ignorant drivers officially starts Monday and ends next Sunday. Next, Charlottesville police plan to do a similar project with bicyclists.
