UVA Architecture Competition Creates Designs for Belmont Bridge

Posted: Updated:

A world renowned architect and architecture students at the University of Virginia hope to give back to the community with their designs. A project called Belmont Vortex has the students bridging the gap between Belmont and the downtown mall - literally.

Architect Eduardo Arroyo and UVA students hope to bring a more residential vibe to the Belmont Bridge. The entire school of architecture has split up into 29 teams to take part in this competition.

Arroyo is heading up the mission as students work to produce a more pedestrian friendly bridge, and they are excited to give back to Charlottesville.

Architecture graduate student Sarah Cancienne said, "It's a great way for us to present some work to the community, show what we can offer, give some ideas and perspectives that might not usually come out."

The bridge ideas will be on display for the public to vote on at the Music Resource Center on Ridge Street next Saturday, February 11. The winner will be able to enter the city's Belmont Bridge design competition.
