A controversial way to extract precious oil and natural gas from the earth is the hot topic at the main branch of the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library Thursday night.
The documentary "Gasland" will be shown at 7 p.m. as part of the library's documentary series.
The drilling method, commonly known as hydraulic fracturing or fracking, is a means of natural gas extraction employed in deep natural gas well drilling. It is kicking up environmental concerns close to home.
Librarian Linda Smoke said, "The Shenandoah Valley is right there on the edge. Some of those areas are involved and our speaker tonight Bruce Ritchie is coming from Bergton to speak to us about this because some of the land in Bergton has been leased."
Bergton is in Rockingham County. Ritchie is the author of a book on land, air and water stewardship and an environmental activist.
