Charlottesville Police Investigate Death in Hotel Room

Posted: Updated:

Charlottesville police are investigating the death of a woman at the Red Roof Inn on West Main Street in Charlottesville.

Just after 1:00 Sunday afternoon, police responded to a call reporting that a member of the hotel's maintenance staff found what looked like a man and woman unconscious in a room on the eighth floor.

When the Charlottesville Albemarle Rescue Squad arrived on scene, they pronounced the woman dead and took the man to the University of Virginia Medical Center.

Police say they are investigating the situation like any major case.

"Right now the crime scene folks from the forensic units and detectives are on the scene conducting their investigation and trying to put together the pieces of the puzzle to determine what happened here and what led up to this," explained Lieutenant Ronnie Roberts of the Charlottesville Police Department.

Roberts said hotel maintenance staff went into the room when the two did not check out of the hotel at the required time, and after hotel staff tried repeatedly to call their room. The door of the room was also locked from the inside.

Roberts said that as of  late Sunday night, the two had been identified, though police will not release those identities until family has been notified.  Possible cause of death has also not been released; however, police say the two were not elderly.

Investigators say the man remains unconscious at UVA Medical Center Saturday night.
