JABA Volunteers Help Sort Food for Seniors

Posted: Updated:

More than two dozen people came together Monday to help hungry seniors. Volunteers with the Jefferson Area Board for Aging (JABA), including Charlottesville Mayor Satyendra Huja, sorted canned foods for its Soup for Seniors Donation Drive at the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.

The last Soup for Seniors Donation Drive collected 2,000 cans, enough to stock the shelves for JABA's Food Bag Program for several months.  They hope to double that this time around.

JABA Manager of Volunteer Services Martha Williams said, "Hunger is soaring across America and it hits very vulnerable populations like seniors who really can't get out of the house especially in the winter time to buy food or to order food out."

After being sorted and placed in boxes, the donated items were loaded up on a truck and delivered.
