Georgetown University Study Reveals Lack of Architecture Jobs

Posted: Updated:

University of Virginia graduates are having a harder time than ever finding a job, some more than others.  The results of a Georgetown University study as to who may have it the toughest may surprise you.

The highest rate of unemployment is among architecture students at 13.9 percent.

Kim Tanzer, a dean of the University of Virginia School of Architecture said, "Architects are very closely aligned with the ups and downs of the construction industry, and of course the construction industry nationally has been very hard hit by this recession."

In the past, most students would streamline into working for an architectural firm that's based around the construction industry.

Brad Schuck, with the University of Virginia School of Architecture said, "I'd say this year more so than in the past couple of years students have been more thinking about problem solving industries whether that revolves construction or not."

Students are cautiously optimistic, being that 80 percent of students who sought winter externships actually went through and gained them.  The university is also working hard to make sure they have the tools they need for success.

Tanzer stated, "Our students are the best value they get for their money in any discipline whatsoever.  I think recognizing that and cultivating that in economically challenging times because our students know they have to work really hard."

Tanzer has found that the rough economy has motivated her students to work harder in their internships and classes so they are best prepared for what the real world has to bring in this tough job market.
